"My pencil and your pencil are the same. There is no difference."
My pencil is the same as yours.

"Four times three is twelve and three times four is, too."
Four times three is the same as three times four.


...DIFFERENT FROM...

"John’s coat is large and brown. Paul’s coat is small and gray."
John’s coat is different from Paul’s.
"John is short. He’s always happy. Paul is tall and he’s seldom happy."
John is different from Paul.


...LIKE...

"John’s coat is similar to Paul’s."
John’s coat is like Paul’s.

"John’s new car looks almost the same as Paul’s."
John’s new car looks like Paul’s.


...THE SAME ... AS...

Used with nouns.
I am the same height as you.
My pencil is the same length as yours.
He is the same age as my father.


...AS ... AS...

Used with adjectives.
I am as tall as you.
My pencil is as long as yours.
He is as old as my father.



...AS ... AS...

Used with expressions of quantity.

Ex: I bought 5 books, and George did too.
I bought as many as George.

Ex: She drinks two cups of coffee, and John did too.
She drinks as much as John.
She drinks as many cups of coffee as John.


...AS ... AS...

Used with adverbs.

Ex: John speaks clearly. Mary also speaks clearly.
Mary speaks as clearly as John.

Ex: John swims very fast, but Mary doesn’t.
Mary doesn’t swim as fast as John.
